There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure. That is why medical and environment health organizations stress the need to minimize exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. Regulations require that a Good Faith survey be performed before authorizing repair, remodeling or demolition projects. A Good Faith asbestos survey must be conducted by an AHERA Building Inspector before a demolition or major renovation can take place. The survey determines if asbestos is present from the structure by sampling building materials for laboratory analysis.

Based on regulatory requirements, an asbestos survey needs to be included as part of the demolition permit application. If there is no asbestos, the demolition permit may be approved. If there is asbestos in the structure, it will need to be removed before renovation/demolition activities can occur.
